So you’re probably driving up Highway 109 daily and wondering why the new roundabout at Route BA South in Wildwood has been delayed. The good news is that construction is expected to resume soon, and the project is still on track to be completed by early December 2026.
Why Work Stopped on the Highway 109 and Route BA Roundabout in Wildwood
Construction on the new roundabout at Highway 109 and Route BA South in Wildwood has temporarily stopped, but the delay is not related to a labor dispute or funding issue.
According to an August 10, 2026, memorandum from Wildwood Public Works Director and City Engineer Rick Brown, the contractor discovered discrepancies between the project’s design plans and the actual conditions at the construction site.
These discrepancies required additional surveying, redesign work, and revisions to the construction plans. HR Green, the project’s designer and construction-engineering consultant, was reportedly close to completing the necessary changes as of August 10.
Current Project Status
The City of Wildwood provided the following updates:
- Gershenson Construction paused work for several weeks.
- The project is approximately 50% complete.
- Construction remains in Phase 1B, which involves approximately the western half of the roundabout.
- The mechanically stabilized earth retaining wall along Route BA has been completed.
- Portions of the permanent pavement and stormwater infrastructure have been installed.
- The city expected construction to resume around mid-August.
Once the current paving work is completed, traffic will be shifted onto the newly constructed pavement. That will allow Gershenson to begin Phase 2 and construct the eastern half of the roundabout.
After Phase 2, traffic will be moved onto the completed roundabout for the final phase. Remaining work will include construction of the traffic islands, final milling and resurfacing, pavement markings, signs, lighting, and other finishing work.
New Completion Estimate
Before the work stoppage, Gershenson’s project schedule called for the roundabout to be completely finished by November 5, 2026.
Wildwood estimates that the redesign and plan revisions have placed the project approximately three weeks behind schedule. The city is now optimistic that most of the construction can be completed by December 1, weather permitting.
However, as of the August 10 memorandum, Gershenson had not submitted an updated formal construction schedule confirming that date.
What Has Not Been Disclosed
The city has not publicly explained exactly which site conditions differed from the engineering plans. The discrepancy could involve elevations, drainage infrastructure, utility locations, roadway geometry, or another field condition, but the memorandum does not provide that level of detail.
The city also has not announced whether the redesign or additional work will increase the project’s cost.
The construction contract was awarded to Gershenson Construction for approximately $2.47 million. Wildwood is eligible to receive up to $1.36 million in federal transportation funding toward the project.
